One-way private pick-up transfer from airport to hotel.
Hotel: Skytel Hotel Chengdu or similar (1 night stay)
After breakfast, you will board a flight to Lhasa, the provincial capital of Tibet. Upon arrival, you will have the afternoon to gently acclimatize to the high altitude of 3,650 meters and casually discover the “City of Sunshine.” We recommend taking it easy to allow your body time to adjust to the new environment.
Hotel: Xinding Hotel or similar (3 nights’ stay)
Your day begins at one of Tibet’s most iconic sites—the Potala Palace, the highest palace in the world and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Perched at an elevation of nearly 3,700 meters, it once served as the winter residence of the Dalai Lama. Afterwards, you will proceed to the deeply revered Jokhang Temple, the ultimate destination for countless pilgrims and the spiritual core of Tibetan Buddhism. In the afternoon, take a leisurely stroll through Barkhor Street, a vibrant circular lane encircling the monastery, where you can browse handmade crafts, prayer wheels, and sample traditional Tibetan foods. Please note: Due to possible access restrictions at religious sites, last-minute adjustments to the itinerary may occur. We thank you for your understanding and flexibility.
Today, you will journey north of Lhasa to visit Sera Monastery, home to around 800 monks. The origin of its name remains part of its allure—some say it derives from the wild roses (“Sera”) that once grew on the site, while others attribute it to the Tibetan word for hail (“sera”), which legend says fell during its construction. If your timing allows, you may observe the lively religious debates held by the monks—an impressive display of theological discourse. Your exploration continues at Drepung Monastery, located in the western part of the city. As one of Lhasa’s three great monastic institutions, it has long served as a major educational center for Lamaist monks and was where the Dalai Lamas were prepared for their spiritual and leadership duties. The day concludes with a visit to Norbulingka, the former summer residence of the Dalai Lama. You’ll explore its serene palace buildings and expansive parklands, gaining deep insight into the cultural and historical life of Tibet’s spiritual leader.
Today, you will ascend to an elevation of approximately 4,400 meters to behold the stunning Yamdrok Lake, located about 100 kilometers from Lhasa. This sacred body of water offers breathtaking views and is perfect for photography and gentle walks. Thanks to the region’s minimal pollution, the crystal-clear waters vividly reflect the surrounding mountains, clouds, and sky—and you may even spot schools of fish swimming near the shore. You will later visit two significant cultural sites: the historic Gyantse Fortress and the revered Kumbum Stupa. Both are considered essential highlights of the region, offering a window into Tibet’s rich architectural and spiritual traditions. In the evening, you will continue to Shigatse, Tibet’s second-largest city, where you will check in to your hotel and have time for a good rest.
Hotel: Shiga Yangcha Grand Hotel or similar (1 night stay)
Today, you might want to seek—and find—moments of deep contentment during a visit to Tashilhunpo Monastery. Not only is this an active monastic complex, but it is also the traditional seat of the Panchen Lama, the second-highest figure in Tibetan Lamaism. Founded in 1447, it is recognized today as one of Tibet’s four great Buddhist monasteries. Around midday, you will proceed to Dingri, situated near the gateway to a national park crowned by one of planet earth’s true giants: Mount Everest.
Hotel: Qomolangma Hotel or similar (1 night stay)
After a hearty breakfast, you will set out for an encounter with Mount Everest—or nearly so. Your destination is Rongbuk Monastery, perched at an altitude of 5,200 meters and believed to be the highest Buddhist monastery in the world. After absorbing unforgettable views of the majestic summit, you will return to Shigatse by evening.
Hotel: Shiga Yangcha Grand Hotel or similar (1 night stay)
Today offers a more relaxed pace. In the morning, you will visit a vibrant local market, where you can discover a wide variety of regional delicacies. As a major hub in the area, the city attracts numerous nomadic traders who come to sell their goods, creating a market that spans several streets alive with color and exotic aromas.
It’s an ideal place not only to sample local flavors but also to capture striking photographs. Later, you will drive back to Lhasa, enjoying scenic views along the way.
Hotel: Xinding Hotel or similar (1 night’ stay)
After breakfast, you will board a comfortable soft-sleeper train (4-berth cabin) across the Tibetan plateau bound for Xining—a city with over 2,100 years of history that once served as a vital hub between central China and the western regions along the Silk Road. Depending on your arrival time, you may take a stroll through the old town and gain your first impressions of this historically rich city and its 2.4 million residents.
Accommodation: on the train (4-berth cabin)
Today, you will explore the region’s Islamic culture with a visit to the 600-year-old Dongguan Mosque in Xining. Learn how Islam was introduced to China via the Silk Road, and admire the mosque’s unique blend of traditional Chinese as well as Islamic architectural styles. If you’re looking for last-minute souvenirs, the local market offers a final chance to browse handcrafted artifacts and aromatic oriental spices.
Hotel: Luxury Blue Horizon Hotel or similar (1 night stay)
Depending on your flight time, you will be transferred to the airport today for your return home or your connecting journey.
